Art is selected by various criteria such as auction records, provenance of established artists, and in emerging artists that which displays technical difficulty and is emotionally charged. There must be an element of drama in the life of the artist or subject, or an acutely meaningful narrative to the piece that the artist has explained. The impact of the work is palpable, and the backstory fortifies it's value. The intense reaction provoked by great art is palpable when felt as energy poured into each millimeter, piercing through the eyes of it's creator, commanding his or her hand, ear, eye, aimed at the audience.

In practical financial terms, esoteric or aesthetic, art valuation involves comparing data from multiple sources such as art galleries, private and corporate collectors, curators and consultants, not only for collection, and as investments, but as part of estate valuations, for charitable contributions, tax planning, and insurance purposes.

As with any investment, due diligence is the responsibility of the buyer and no guarantees are made, hence the thrill at the sound of the auction gavel and closing bell, when astute data collection, instinct and cultural pollination combine to reach fruition.
